About Us

Hi, I’m Tara!

Welcome! My name is Tara MacGillivray, and I am a Registered Psychotherapist and the owner of New Heights Psychotherapy. After spending 16 years in the child welfare field as both a child protection worker and supervisor, I decided to change careers and pursue my dream of becoming a full-time therapist. Although I loved my career, for years there was a little voice in the back of my mind telling me that my role as a “helper” was going to involve a big change, and in 2020, I took a leap of faith and began my journey to become a psychotherapist.

I have always had a passion for helping others and I feel highly fortunate to be in a position to offer therapeutic services to those in need. I enjoy helping people who have experienced all sorts of life challenges including but not limited to anxiety, depression, self-esteem, trauma, relationships, separation/divorce, parenting, grief, and intimate partner violence. My time working in child welfare as well as in providing psychotherapy to my clients has provided me with a strong foundation for working with both children and adults. I focus on walking beside my clients through their journeys, empowering them to build upon their already-existing strengths and helping them to heal their wounds.

In my personal life, I am a wife and the mother of two children. I reside on the outskirts of Ottawa, ON, and you can often find me practicing self-care by paddling on my paddle board, walking through my local hiking trails, or, every once in a while, enjoying a good Netflix binge session.
